Beauty from Broken – 1. Neil’s Story

Updated: Mar 1, 2021

This blog titled ‘Beauty from Broken’ is inspired by the belief that beauty can 'spring up' from the most broken situation. As you read this true story, be encouraged that hope can be found, even in the hardest times. So, are you ready for a snapshot into the life of an ordinary person who has endured an extraordinary challenge? I’m excited to introduce you to my good friend Niel Luttig.

Neil, tell us a bit about yourself...

I was born and grew up in Cape Town, SA, emigrated to London UK when I was a young man. Then made another leap to Canada, when I was an 'older' young man.

Can you share what happened to you?

In August 2017, I was out one sunny afternoon riding my motorbike alone and had a head-on collision with a car. I have no recollection of the incident, I don’t even remember getting on my bike that day. Apparently I was rushed to Penticton General Hospital by air ambulance, in a coma. I had suffered a severe brain injury due to the shearing of blood in my brain. Additionally I had a broken femur, badly dislocated left knee, some broken vertebrae and a badly damaged spinal cord. I was moved to Vancouver General Hospital where I regained consciousness 4/5 weeks after the collision. Early in October I was transferred to GF Strong hospital, a facility to strengthen and recover. This is where I was informed that all my bones had healed. Doctors were most amazed at my brain recovery. The only aspect of my injuries that medical science did not know how to restore was my damaged spinal cord; they told me I should be prepared to be in a wheelchair for some time.

What Beauty has come from this Broken situation?

My Lord, my God has already healed me of so much. He has been working on removing the ‘scales’ from my eyes and showing me the true value of my lovely wife, Rosario. How deeply lovely she is and the profound depth of value that she brings to our relationship. She has been faithfully and prayerfully by my bedside, daily throughout all of this.

Is there anything else you’d like to say to our readers?

Although you may be facing some apparently insurmountable difficulties, never give up hope. I believe that the Lord knows our situations and desires to see us healed and restored.

Is there an inspiring quote or scripture that has helped you through this season?

‘You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made’ (Psalm 139:13-14). The Lord formed me together once before and He can do it again... where Medical Science may not have a way, our Creator does.

Niel thanks so much for sharing your inspiring story! Please comment if this post has encouraged you, or you have any questions for Niel, perhaps you have your own 'Beauty from Broken' story to share... I'd love to hear from you.
